Simultaneous Equations

Summary

simultaneous equations are sets of two or more equations with solutions which must be correct for the variables in each equation.

simultaneous equations can contain any number of variables but are usually only easily solvable if there are the same number of variables as there are equations.

the bursary statistics prescription covers groups of two simultaneous equations with two variables and three equations with three variables. the functions used are linear (straight line) systems.

the elimination method and the substitution method are used to solve systems of simultaneous equations.

Key Skills

  • find the solution set for two and three equation systems of simultaneous equations.
  • use simultaneous equations to solve problems.
  • understand and comment on the differences between systems of simultaneous equations with solutions which are unique, inconsistent or dependent.

Vocabulary

simultaneous equations, dependent equations, inconsistent equations
