Calculators and Spreadsheets

computers and calculators are the tools of modern mathematicians of all ages.

spreadsheets can perform calculations using numbers and formulae arranged in rows and columns of cells.

calculators should not be used for simple mental calculations, and at junior level are best used for checking answers.

Key Skills

  • make sensible estimates and check the reasonableness of answers from calculators and computers
  • use a calculator to carry out basic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square roots, powers and calculations involving brackets
  • use a spreadsheet to enter and format data, carry out the four basic operations, and construct formulae involving cells
  • use spreadsheets to sort data and draw graphs.
