1. Why do we need to study symmetry?

You only have to look around you to see the huge number of man-made items and objects in nature to see that many of them show symmetry of one type or another. There are many occupations such as architecture, design and engineering, where an appreciation of the properties and advantages of symmetry is essential.

2. What is the difference between an axis of symmetry and a mirror line?

Not much! A mirror line is part of a reflection. An axis of symmetry is usually drawn on a shape.

3. Do all shapes have line symmetry?

No. There are many shapes that have no axes of symmetry. A scalene triangle or a parallelogram are two common examples.

4. Can a shape have an order of rotational symmetry of 0?

No. All shapes have an order of symmetry of at least 1 (This is a turn of 360o)
