Approximation and Estimation

1. When rounding a number to 3 decimal places do I count any zeros in the number?

Yes, any zeros that come after the decimal point ARE counted in the number of decimal places.

e.g. If 3.4059 is rounded to 3 decimal places it becomes 3.406.

2. When rounding to the nearest whole number what happens to a number with one half in it?

A number containing a half, when rounded to the nearest whole number, would be rounded UP.

e.g. 3.4 rounded to the nearest whole number would be 3
3.5 rounded to the nearest whole number would be 4.
3.6 rounded to the nearest whole number would be 4.

3. What is the difference between significant figures and decimal places?

When working out significant figures, start at the first non zero digit in the number.

When working out decimal places, start at the decimal point
