Fractions with variables obey the same rules as fractions with numbers.

Simplifying

Algebraic fractions can be simplified, like number fractions, by dividing or cancelling.

Adding and subtracting

If the denominators are the same, add or subtract the numerators.

Example

If the denominators are different, a common denominator must be found.

Multiplying

When multiplying fractions, cancel first, if possible, then multiply top line and then bottom lines.

Dividing

When dividing fractions, turn the second fraction upside down and change to multiplying.
