BEDMAS

BEDMAS means that the order that calculations are carried out is:

 

Brackets:

Work out the value of any expressions inside brackets.

Exponents:

Work out the value of any numbers or expressions with exponents or indices.

Sometimes shown as 'of ' meaning multiply.

Division:

Multiplication:

If these two operations occur together, work from left to right.

Addition:

Subtraction:

If these two operations occur together, work from left to right.

4 + (6 − 2) = 4 + 4 = 8

13 − 12 ÷ 6 + 4 = 13 − 2 + 4 =15

Do Exponent first

3 × 6 2 = 3 × 36 = 108
